Chiltern Crusaders CC Lost By 77 Runs
Match report
The now traditional season curtain-raiser at Kew started with Semi-Skip ordering the most expensive cab in Britain. Three debutants were included in the line up, including an 11th hour call-up for our Greek/Cypriot international ringer Harry C. We knew we were on to a winner with Harry when he marched out to the middle looking every inch the cricketer (until we noticed the bum bag with his roll ups).
In many ways this was a very typical Crusaders match. Skip won the toss and bottled it, inserting the oppo. Optimism was rife nonetheless and in extraordinary scenes it was 0-1 after the first over with an unplayable Semi-Skip in-ducker taking out their opener. Two more wickets in a deadly Semi-Skip spell left Kew rocking at 33-3. The Sheffield Steamer then joined the party with two well-earned wickets and, at 85-5, the feeling was that Skip's decision to bowl first was, in fact, inspired (in Skip's head at least). However, the middle 20 overs were, as often happens, our undoing, and the oppo had moved their better bats down the order to 6 and 7, scoring 104 and 101 both retired not out. A tough session for all, but one highlight was Rob's usual sterling effort in the field. After the retirees were gone the scoring slowed and another of our debutants, Pukar, picked up 2 wickets in a nice spell to end the inning. They racked up 278 for 7 in the 40 overs and that is a Crusaders record for most runs conceded in an inning.
The Crusaders inning started steadily, but Skip's frustration at not being able to beat the infield got the better of him and he was gone for a scratchy 9. Nick hung around for a while, before succumbing to another lbw. Rhodesey's finger was up faster than the blink of an eye but Jamie, at the non strikers end, said he would have walked off it that wasn't given. Speaking of Jamie, the last of our debutants, having produced a nice spell of leg spin toward the end of their inning, he opened the batting and saw it almost all the way through the 40 overs. A strong partnership with Matt took us to respectability, and then, after Matt holed out for 41, it was all about Jamie getting to 100. It was a race against time, but as the final 5 overs started and he needed 30 to get there, he was expertly and brilliantly assisted in farming the right strike by Gary (playing his favourite very late cut for all 10 of his not out singles).Into the nervous nineties and 2 overs to go had everyone rooting for a rare Crusaders century, but it wasn't to be as he holed out on 92. A very classy knock indeed. We finished with a flurry of big hitting by Pukar as we pulled ourselves up to 201 for 5 (A positive being that we batted the overs and lost less wickets than they did!).
A few post-match beers after another enjoyable day at Kew in a great location. I think we can say a respectable performance in the end. Well played all the debutants. Jamie (92) and Alex (3-35) are on the honours board (see the website). The oppo were very gracious and as I always say when they ask us to come back (and in this case for a possible return fixture later in the season) then we must be doing something right.
