Match report
There were moments of controversy, superb skill, pure gold comedy and ultimately it was a pretty close match that was tense all the way to the end.
So where do we start. Well in unprecedented scenes Skip won the toss and boldly said “we’ll have a bat”. The track looked ok and looking at the line up on paper there should have been runs. Jamie fired off a couple of boundaries in the first over and Skip was feeling pretty pleased with the decision already. But no, the first moment of controversy. In time, they’ll be calling it the “inside edge that was heard around the world”. Khurrum making a welcome return to the side was looking to pile on his usual quick runs, but 2nd ball inside edged one on to his pads and the oppo appealed long and hard. Gazza in a play to retain the COTY award thought about it for a second and decided they’d shouted loud enough and up went the finger.
Jim Slater, making his Crusaders debut, went in at 3 and with Jamie built a nice partnership. It was slow going with some accurate bowling from both ends but solid stuff. Eventually he was gone for 33 and out to the middle went Iain. He didn’t last long however with another lbw (given by Khurrum this time) – we will never learn, we are the most generous team (to the oppo) that I know when it comes to lbw against our own players! If in doubt it aint out (see their inning later)!
Then a moment of pure comedy gold. Jonte our overseas international from Paramatta, NSW, Australia, with muscles bigger than our number 10 and 11 (Eisah and Jake), couldn’t find a box. With a shrug of the shoulders “I’ve got two pairs of grundies on, she’ll be right” off he went. Brilliant! He was back in the hutch less than 60 seconds later losing his leg stump first ball.
In amongst the mayhem, Jamie moved up to his 2nd 50 in as many matches, another classy knock. Alas, shortly after, he was gone, and Skip and Semi-Skip found themselves with half an hour to try and get the score up. The red mist fell for Skip after a few words about an edge behind (I didn’t hit it) and next ball suckered by a slower ball and played the ugliest of ugly leg side hoiks over the top of it. We just about managed to bat out the time, Gary last to fall, leaving Jake stranded on 3 n.o. having slapped 2 beamers through mid-wicket and feeling pretty pleased with his infinite average for the season.
We set them 155 to win and it always felt a bit light, but it has to be said it was very good effort by all in the field to keep things tight. Semi was at his imperious best taking 3-fer, but the star of the show was undoubtedly our 11 year old debutant Eisah. He came on first change following a sharp (if slightly erratic) spell of left arm pace from the big Aussie. Eisah, from the off, was bowling his fizzing leg breaks, it was seriously impressive stuff, he took out 2 of their middle order, including a steepler to Jake at mid wicket which very few current, former or future Crusaders would have taken. In the book it’s b. Saba (aged 11) c. Wilson (aged 12) – very nice! Suddenly there was murmuring from the oppo about 11 year olds only allowed to bowl 6 overs – there was clearly some concern! He finished with 2-39 and the game finely poised. Then his old man, Khurrum, removed their opener (via an unbelievable diving catch from Iain behind the stumps) and suddenly there was a sniff of victory in the air, 5 wickets to get, 50 runs to defend, 13 overs to go. In the end their skip and one of the bowlers (who was having a good day after taking 5 of our wickets) managed to keep the score rolling over and heading toward victory. There was a moment with 12 to get and 3 wickets left when Khurrum managed to find a spot on the pitch to send the bowl extremely low in to their Skip’s pads and it looked gone for all money. There was a very (possibly overly) enthusiastic appeal. Not given. It might have been an interesting last 12 runs with 2 wickets to get, we’ll never know. If in doubt it aint out!
It was a close competitive game, with something for everyone, and it’s a lovely location up there.
