Chiltern Crusaders CC v Missenden Misfits on Sun 02 Jul 2017 at 2.00pm
Chiltern Crusaders CC Won By 5 wickets
Match report
A win! Our second win of the season, and for the first time this season no debutants. The score line of 142-5 chasing 141 all out makes it look relatively easy, but as Diamond Dave said himself (next man in) his sphyncta was twitching several times a second (not a pleasant thought!).
Skip won the toss and inserted, and then completely on his own without suggestion from anyone else (and definitely not from Matt), opened with the Sheffield Steamer at one end and spin in the form of Andy from the other. Inspirational captaincy everyone agreed. Rhodesey bowled as tight as a nun's chuff ending with figures of 1-11 off 5.2 overs, this allowed Andy to bowl his 25 yarders with free reign to lob it up there. He took a couple of overs to find his range but then a spell of wizardry ensued. He got their skipper out, gave him the finger and got himself fired up. 29 for 1 became 56 for 6 as Patton ripped through them taking 4-40 and finding himself on the honours board for the first time. He was helped along with 2 other outstanding displays, the first from Matt behind the sticks who was in great form taking 3 catches and a stumping on the day. The other was Stewart making a welcome but ultimately short return to the team. He was basically unplayable swinging his medium pace both ways before collapsing in a back injury induced heap - he managed 2.5 overs 2 wickets for zero runs, 5 wickets looked well and truly on. Let's hope the back snaps back in to place it will be a shame if that's the last we see of him in Crusaders colours, though his slip fielding won't be missed (ducked under a catch straight at him).
A smattering of other fielding highlights included Bomber's now customary first over of slow beamers disappearing for 16 runs, Patton dramatically throwing his sunglasses off as a catch came towards him only for it disappear through his legs for 4, and Dicky Walker taking a fine high catch (no one-handed antics this time around).
It was, all round, a great display in the field, and a great team effort from everyone.
142 to win looked achievable, but Skip seems to have found a way of getting out to short wide rubbish every innings - he toe edged it on the stretch in to the keepers mitts and a partnership between Jim and Matt was needed. That's exactly what they did, Jim cut loose and Matt played to protect his squad leading average, and between them they took the scored from 10-1 to 107-2. Drinks break was the killer and Matt was caught behind fishing outside off stump a few runs short of retaining his lead in the averages (now 72.3 vs Jamie's 74.5, oh shame!). Patton was in next and was out LBW for the 14th time in 16 Crusaders innings (and it wasn't even Skip that gave him out this time). Nick followed shortly after and now we were starting to feel nervous 117-4 and still 25 runs away. Jim after a tremendous knock finally fell for 89 with the line in sight, another case of ton avoidance (it seems unbelievable that I've referred to ton avoidance in almost every game this season!). What followed was the most excruciating yet ultimately fulfilling 8 overs of cricket. 13 needed and painstakingly, and with sheer determination, the Steamer (5 not out off 25 balls) and Bomber (6 not out off 27 balls) got us over the line for a well deserved win.
Well done to all. Bring on the tour.
