Bowden CC - Tour v Chiltern Crusaders CC on Sun 09 Jul 2017 at 1.00pm
Chiltern Crusaders CC Won By 2 wickets
Match report
Sunday dawned and Skip was down at Tesco Express buying the tea shortly after others were only just getting to sleep. After a narrow loss the previous day optimism was rife among the Crusaders despite some bleary eyes and plenty of action in the "Trainspotting" toilet in the pavilion back at Nevill Holt where we took on Bowden CC in a 20/20.
Crusaders matches are never without incident and this was no exception. Bowden batted first and generally batted pretty well, but we also did a good job in bowling tightly. George took a well deserved wicket of their skipper and Bartlett was in imperious form taking 4 wickets including a blinder of a caught and bowled to remove their opener. The fielding highlights were, as ever numerous. This time Skip dropped a howler off Patton's bowling, completely misjudging it. Perhaps the funniest moment was Patton's run out attempt. I'm not even sure I can do justice to the description. A quick single was taken to Patton fielding at mid wicket who picked up and, in an attempt to effect the run out, with a superman style dive, threw towards bowlers end only for the ball to go straight in to the floor, Patton landed on his face, and the ball subsequently trickled back toward the bowler without ever actually getting there.
We were set 117 to win and we randomly drew our batting order. This put Rhodesy and George as our opening pair. Rhodesy as the senior player and expected to rise to the occasion, bottled it giving George the first ball!
George, in we believe a Crusaders first, was out first ball of the inning, clean bowled for a "platinum" duck. At 36-4 after 9 overs and a lot of dot balls the run rate require was climbing rapidly, but then entered Edlin for his first bat for the Crusaders. He hit 4,4,2,4 in his first 4 balls and suddenly there was a bit of a sniff.
Patton was out Lbw (again) and in walked Skip. Edlin was facing, swung and missed, keeper missed and 2 byes were there for the taking. The first came easy and then Edlin inexplicably stopped running in the middle of the second, leaving Skip stranded in the middle of the pitch. Run out without facing a ball for a "diamond duck". Skip was, to put it mildly, absolutely furious and the air turned many shades of blue as he walked off.
As a footnote, a diamond and a platinum duck in the same inning cannot have happened many times!
Not to be put off by the incident, Beckwith went in and played some excellent cricket to keep up with the run rate, making 28 following Edlin's 23 (despite the incident, Skip has to admit a tremendous first effort in CCCC colours).
It was down to Bartlett and Finn with 8 wickets down and 25 to get in around 6 overs. All they needed to do was bat sensibly and that is exactly what they did. Finn, whose batting has really improved over the last year or two was very solid and he brought out the windmill arms as we crossed the line for a deserved and eventful win.
What's apparent is like last year is that the Sunday of the tour certainly brings out some potential COTY winners:
-Patton's run out attempt
-Rhodesy getting George to face first ball of the inning
-George out first ball of the inning
-Edlin running out Skip
-Skips reaction to be running out
So the end of the tour, quite surprisingly, ended gloriously with a win. That's now 3 wins this season (from 8), and still time for 1 or 2 more possibly!
It was certainly an eventful and entertaining tour with something for everyone on and off the pitch!
