Nevill Holt CC - Tour v Chiltern Crusaders CC on Sat 08 Jul 2017 at 1.00pm
Chiltern Crusaders CC Lost By 10 Runs
Match report
Saturday of the tour started rather earlier than usual as the intrepid tourists travelled up to base camp in Kettering to watch the Lions vs NZ decider. We were excellently entertained at Kettering RFC with bacon rolls and guiness flowing. The drawn series for the Touring Lions was something to aim at for the touring Crusaders!
On arrival at Nevill Holt, we were feverishly looking around for the 2 West Indians that belted us out of the game last year. One of them sauntered up just before the start and Skip's heart sank, but then he disappeared down the road (a couple of mile walk apparently) to another game....village cricket!
NH batted first and, as is now becoming a glorious habit, a couple of early wickets fell, Rhodesy and Patton reducing them to 13-2 off 4. Wickets fell at timely intervals and at 98-5 after 20 we were feeling good, though the run rate on a slow and variable bouncing pitch was perhaps a bit high for our liking. Bartlett bowled a miserly spell of 2-15, but middle overs overall were expensive again. A Wilson pearoller took out their high scorer which was a) embarrassing given how poor a ball it was and b) scary as an opening bat thinking that could easily happen to us. George made a return to Crusaders colours and bowled towards the end of the inning putting it on the spot. 194-9 was the final total with wickets shared around, very pleasing to see.
As usual the real fun was in the fielding highlights, of which there were a fair few! Rob and Al took solid catches. Steve Edlin on debut was enthusiastic in the field, so much so that in diving for the ball he was doing it a couple of seconds early. With actual gunfire in the woods at one stage the thought flashed through the mind that he'd been taken out by snipers rather than poor timing -- the latter it was. Perhaps the overall highlight was Martin. Hector the dog, the oppo mascot, was hobbling around the boundary and his movement was remarkably similar to Martins, so much so that his tour nickname (and perhaps forever) became Hector. Skip mindful of Michele's wrath should Hector come home lame was positioned at slip. Everything that was edged was flying through gully though, so later in the inning when Semi came back on, skip instructed hector to move wider. A few balls later Hector decided otherwise and in a blatant display of mutiny put himself back in to 1st slip. Skip shouted from fine leg, "if that ball goes through gully I won't be happy", 2 balls later, you know where it goes.....some would say COTY behaviour, though that easily gets trumped the following day (see next match).
Skip and Semi opened the batting and were watchful through the first few overs, particularly against "Dunks" who was on the spot pretty much every ball. It was 50-0 and going reasonably well as Skip took a liking to the spinner that came on, but then mis-read a quicker flatter one. Bartlett, Beckwith, Finn and Patton all batted well in the middle overs but it was tough slow wicket and hard to get away and the run rate was always creeping up. Partridge had his off stump clattered but somehow the bails didn't budge, and Patton managed to run Rob out without scoring (to be fair the chase was on though so every run was needed). In the end we fell 10 runs short.
It was a great days cricket with something for everyone, good weather and our friendliest oppo. We all retired to the Nevill Arms for several jugs and great banter and a good laugh with the oppo. Curry followed and was the best tour curry we've ever had, in a place that had something strange yet alluring about it. Bong-smoking next to a super bike prior to chicken tikka masala is certainly new. Rhodesey occasionally waking up from his stupor to ingest his vindaloo was a vivid tour memory. Onwards to "Decades, Kettering" and the rest as they say is history.....
