Chiltern Crusaders CC v Strollers CC on Sun 16 Jul 2017 at 1.30pm
Chiltern Crusaders CC Lost By 30 Runs

Match report In the end in this oldest of Crusaders fixtures we went down, but not with out a fight and some highlights.

Regular readers of the CCCC reports will know that the front running for COTY has changed throughout the year, and following this weekend a new bookmakers favourite - Jim - has emerged. Having played 3 games for CCCC this year (more than he has for the Strollers), unfortunately for Jim this was always going to happen if the Strollers won. Jim did his best to avoid this and very sportingly asked around BCC on Saturday night for players to help us out (we were hit by injuries and drop outs during the week). He managed to get Andy Reynolds to step in, who is the Aussie paid player who opens the bowling for BCC 1s. A nicer 21 year old you couldn't meet, but his bowling was rubbish to be honest (in comparison to the real attack, more of that later), but he did score a 19 ball 50 for us.

Skip lost the toss and was asked to bowl. Up stepped debutant Mike Hodges to open the bowling with Rhodesey. Mike bowled a nice spell of off spin and was unlucky not to take a wicket. Will Pym, their opener, never looked like getting out and scored a quick 50 before retiring, and then his lad and their number 3 carried the score on, there was really not much happening. Skip then pulled out an over reminiscent of Flintoff in the ashes in 2005, 2 wickets and 2 dropped catches all in the same over (including a sitter dropped on hat trick ball - oh dear Stu not the best start to his Crusaders career!). What wasn't similar to Flintoff was the quality of delivery, all absolute filth.

Then enter Bomber Partridge. Let's face it his bowling hasn't been the best, but the "Flintoff" over was clearly inspirational. He was bowling yorkers and good length balls (and of course the odd beamer) all of which was causing the middle order of the Strollers all sorts of problems. Wickets fell steadily and in his final over he picked up only the second ever 5-fer by a Crusader. Tremendous effort from the Birmingham bullet.

In the end the Strollers got 186 off the 35 overs and it was looking a tough ask. Semi fell early, struggling to time it, and then Mike (by all accounts a good bat back in the day) edged one behind first ball (it was a pretty good ball). Skip then stepped up the pace and hit a few boundaries before losing concentration. The middle overs were a little slow, but then when our Aussie ringer went in and smashed his quick 50 the game was on. This season our tail has wagged well and we felt we were certainly in with a sniff. However Toby Slater (also has played CCCC cricket this year but is too young to be nominated for COTY!) ripped through us and we fell 30 runs short.

Quick mention to Alex and Zac Maile who stepped in for their second game for CCCC, Zac in particular had a great game behind the stumps and scored a solid 25.

Footnote, Gazza completed his day not out as well as the bowling hero (though noting it was 12 not out off 76 balls).
