Cookham Dean Over 45 v Chiltern Crusaders CC on Sun 10 Sep 2017 at 1.00pm
Chiltern Crusaders CC Lost By 5 wickets
Match report
Skip lost the toss and unusually we were asked to bat first. In a shortened 25 over game this was looking ok, however we didn't bat all the overs - all out for 107. On the plus side everyone got a bat though a couple of golden ducks were thrown in for good measure, more of that in a minute. Skip took the opportunity to open the batting with mini-Skip for the first time, a memorable moment for yours truly. Jake outlasted Skip and in fact outlasted the rest of the top 4. A faltering start saw us at 16-3 but then Semi (who has prior good form against the old timers) smashed a quick 50 abley supported by Jake and then Rhodesey. The quality of the batting and yet another excellent spell of bowling later on (5 overs 2 for 5) surely puts him in pole to retain player of the year (only Andrew Egan has done this before). The same couldn't be said of Nick and Martin I'm afraid with some more comedy gold and late pushes for COTY.
Firstly Nick who was given lbw first ball. It looked pretty good from all angles but Nick was either feigning ignorance or doing a good job of concentrating on his own game and spent the next 20 seconds readying himself for the next ball. He was eventually politely tapped on the shoulder by the wicketkeeper and off he trudged. The cherry on the COTY nomination cake was then the claim that the ball was nothing short of a head high bouncer (not a single ball got above shin height all day on a very wet pitch) and that they didn't appeal (we all heard it)!
Then came Martin. Already lucky to get away with not winning COTY last year (remember the longest over and getting out to Alfie), regular readers will remember his cameo appearance on tour did nothing to help COTY avoidance (recall his general immobility, Hector and moving-himself-to-gully-gate). His one and only ball this time was a rotter that missed the pitch entirely but somehow he managed to step across and hit it back to the bowler. Between the ball leaving his bat and hitting the bowlers hands he managed to let rip with "you're having a laugh" in a terrible attempt to put the bowler off, and off he went. The footnote is Ben Taylor managed to outscore his father on the day and for the season.
107 to defend looked tricky but sportingly the oppo kept their better batsmen back so we were able to keep the scoring in check and take a few wickets. Shaun removed their opener while Ben was unlucky not to strike. Jake took a well deserved wicket and figures of 1-18 off 5 overs was a great effort. Known to many of us, Will Pym (century last year) then entered the fray. Probably the best bit of captaincy all year from skip was a very last minute change of mind and got Semi back on to bowl, and sure enough he delivered what was easily the best ball of the season, pitching in line and then moving away to clip off stump. Pym gone for 1 and we thought we had a sniff at 70-5. Alas their next man in was a strong player and farmed the strike easily enough. The usual Crusaders fielding calamities were not to be seen this week (apart from Skip dropping one behind the stumps) and it was all round pretty solid, in the end we just didn't quite have enough runs on the board and they won with 2 overs to spare.
Another good match with the right amount of competitiveness, spirit and all round good fun. A nice end to the season. Well done to all.
