Knotty Green CC v Chiltern Crusaders CC on Sun 03 Sep 2017 at 1.30pm
Chiltern Crusaders CC Lost By 24 Runs
Match report
Skip won the toss, bottled it, and inserted on a wet and grim autumnal day. Echoes of prior fixtures against Knotty were apparent as they got off to a very quick start, helped along by some fairly shabby fielding. The pace trio of Rhodes, Taylor and Bartlett were struggling to find a breakthrough, so we tried some spin and Mike Hodges found a way to take some wickets. He suddenly found himself on a hat trick and not for the first time on the day Skip had a shocker behind the stumps and dropped the edge off the hat trick ball. As always there were some Crusaders fielding specials - Rob managed to do a Cruyff turn with a Ronaldo step-over as a relatively easy stop turned in to kicking it over the boundary for 4. Patton has now perfected the early dive, and managed to re-perform the throw straight in to the floor first seen on tour. Mini-Skip had a bowl and was ecstatic to pick up a wicket, bowled Wilson aged 12, caught Taylor aged 12, very nice to see. Perhaps the moment that summed our fielding was the last ball of the inning, Skip had the easiest of run outs to enact and managed to fall over at exactly the wrong moment and as Mrs Wilson said looked like an upside down beetle with all arms and legs in the air.
A total of 231 in 30 overs was looking daunting but Skip and Semi-Skip got off to a rollicking start, bringing up 50 in the 6th over and it has to be said both were feeling pretty positive, but then Semi was done by a decent length ball and popped it out to point. In came a very nervous looking Mike Hodges who after great fanfare on his debut was out for a golden duck last time. A solid forward defensive and a "King Pair" of ducks was avoided. Skip took one risk too many and top edged a sweep and it was 96-2 after 12 overs. Rhodesey was in at 4 and he and Mike ran in to some steady bowling. The score moved on to 133 after 21. 99 in 9 overs was still looking doable, but Rhodesey was unlucky to get one that kept very low. In came Diamond promoted up the order to 5. The comparisons with David Boon circa 1989 were pretty much spot on as he crashed one through the covers for 4, garnering the biggest cheer of the day, and a raised bat to his adoring fans. Meanwhile Mike had been putting together a very classy knock, timing some beautiful cover drives on his way towards 50. With Diamond doing a sterling job of running between the wickets, Mike started to farm the strike with the target still just about in sight. 4 overs left and 66 needed, 3 overs left and 59 needed - but then an astonishing over of 27 runs including 2 enormous straight 6s in to Penn Road and we'd witnessed the cleanest hitting we've ever had in the Crusaders. During that over Diamond was sacrificed for a run out, and good on Diamond, he was team man all the way to the end of an excellent innings of 12 and a partnership of 67. In went Rob and 32 needed off 2 overs, but alas this season's injury curse struck yet again and Mike in the melee of running had pulled his calf. We sent a runner in but as soon as he got the strike back he struggled to get the same distance and holed out on the boundary. A magnificent 92 off 61 balls, a better knock you would struggle to see. Dicky Walker went in with the unenviable task of hitting 6s to get us over the line. It wasn't to be, but a tremendous effort from all.
In the end, our fielding let us down if we're honest (Skip as much a culprit as anyone), too many easy runs were given away, but that said it was another good team effort from the Crusaders with everyone playing a part and as usual good fun and good team spirit. Man of the match was very obviously Mike (making his way on to both the batting and bowling honours board), but also well done to Diamond who was instrumental in making it possible for Mike to get us close.
