Chiltern Crusaders CC Lost By 72 Runs
Match report
It was perhaps a day when it wasn’t meant to be. Logistics went wrong immediately as Clint was almost left behind. We arrived in Oxford (well, somewhere near Oxford) to find facilities a touch lacking - a long walk, no bar, a building that hadn’t had much care and attention in decades, and to bombers pre-match-poo disdain, no dunny door.
The previous evening, with blatant disregard for its COTY implications, Fyfer had been happily dropping Bomber/Steamer in it with wives as the only ones who make themselves available for every game - Skip is now expecting even more difficulty in getting numbers over the next few weeks!
Skip arranged to field first, given this was still really the first game of the season, the pitch didn’t look great and we were looking a batter or two light.
Harry Taylor and Steamer opened up and straight away looked threatening. In an excellent spell of bowling, working the pitch well, Harry reduced them to 7-3, with 3 wickets in 4 balls and at 13 becomes the youngest Crusader on the honours board.
It was a curious period following that as the oppo numbers 1 and 5 then settled in with some wayward bowling helped them to accelerate quickly up to 100-3 off 15 overs and 150-3 off 23 overs.
Beckwith by then was bowling his trademark 20 mph floaters. He snaffled a wicket via a sharp stumping from Matt, and then wickets started to fall reasonably regularly, though still a bit expensively. Harry came back on and took his fourth wicket and Jake bowled his medium pacers picking up a deserved wicket in the process via an excellent catch from Bomber - very droppable coming at speed.
Nick at the other end was picking up wickets and got himself on the honours board for the 2nd time in his Crusaders career. The last wicket was a magnificent catch behind by Matt off Nick, and while we had conceded 230 we had bowled them out in 35 overs, not something the Crusaders do often. All in all on a hot day a pretty good team effort and not really any fielding gaffs to note as we usually would.
Skip had said to himself at the start 200 was a good total so 230 was looking a bit stiff. Skip and Jamie opened and were watchful against a pair of accurate, if a little unexciting, opening bowlers. Skip, with new bat in hand, struggled to get the timing going in the first few balls, but then flayed one over cover, middled the next one for a well stopped single and the juices were flowing. But oh the calamity. 2 balls later, the finger was up to a big stride forward into an inside edge on to pad. The situation had not been easy for umpires already given the oppo were very happy to appeal for anything. The red mist descended and an unacceptable COTY style verbal was directed at Bomber umpiring, and off Skip stomped.
After that it was, alas, uphill all the way, Jamie batted well for his 45, but off 76 balls he is undoubtedly the new Boycs of the Crusaders. To be fair the bowling was naggingly accurate throughout. Matt gamely tried to get things moving but was struggling to middle it and when he did kept finding fielders. After that no one was in to double figures.
Patton, ever dependable for some element of COTYness, ran out Jake going for a run that wasn’t there and wasn’t his call. Jake has learnt a valuable lesson to say no and stand his ground next time!
We limped to 159 all out (helped by a 15 ball over worth 22 runs of no balls and wides toward the end reminiscent of Taylor Senior in his pomp).
It somehow felt like a winnable game when you looked at the oppo and how they batted/bowled but it wasn’t meant to be. It has to be said, though, well done in particular to the young lads who both acquitted themselves very well with bat and ball.
Footnote: Semi was seen striding across BCC earlier on Sunday, no sign of limp....what could have been....
