Chiltern Crusaders CC Lost By 3 wickets
Match report
Sunday cricket at its best, summed up by the pre match preparation. Skip had endured a horrible morning in Milton Keynes umpiring U13 against cheating opposition umpire. Stuck in an Aylesbury traffic jam, Skip rang Semi to get him to do the toss. Semi with his usual extreme optimism on life (and the Crusaders) said we should bat. Skip said he would be very disappointed if we chose to bat given last week and that we were a batsman lighter this week**. Twenty minutes later Skip arrived and his eyes were not deceiving him as he saw Clint making the opening bowlers look like Walsh and Ambrose, no sign of Jim, and Semi looking like he would be avoiding eye contact.
Skip found Jim relaxing outside the pavilion with iced tea in hand looking like our man in Havana (in the same linen shirt he is now wearing customarily for CCCC games). He was already out second ball. Shortly afterwards Semi was out and at 20-2 a familiar picture was looking likely. Skip went in at 4, and to be fair to Clint it was the pitch that was making the bowlers look good with some pretty variable bounce. Clint took a nasty one in the ribs which was pretty unplayable rising off a normal length ball. He was out shortly after for a well earned 21. But a rebuild was needed - Nick and Skip took it slowly until the spinner came on. Skip decided slog time and managed to hit a few boundaries before taking one risk too many and was caught out in the deep. Nick saw it through longer with some swashbuckling help from DD, Jake (classiest shot of the day clipped off his legs for 4), Rob (with a particularly impressive smash back past the bowler) and our first ever female Crusader, Erin, who looked right at home. Unfortunately the top order collapse meant we were always struggling to post a defendable score and 121 looked too low despite the spicy pitch.
We gave it a good go though. Alex got their Skip out 1st over with a fine catch at cover from Jake. We rotated the bowling around as Bomber went for his usual 10/over and then the unlikely tandem partnership of Jake and Erin took 4 wickets between them. Erin bowled an impressive 6 overs straight 2-32, dead on the money and making life difficult for some decent batsmen. Jake got their best bat out through a moment of redemption for Nick. Unmentioned in last weeks report were his numerous dropped catches. But today was different with a tough catch taken in the deep and one more later for luck. In fact catches were sticking everywhere, Clint took a catch standing up to the stumps, never seen him so excited. There was almost a repeat of the Diamond/Skip catch disaster on tour in 2015, but happily this time they managed to avoid each other and Skip took it safely. 7 wickets down, with 3 for Semi (and on to the honours board) and there was the briefest sniff of an upset but they had enough in the tank to eventually cruise over the line.
It was very hot, we only had 10, but an enjoyable end with very friendly oppo.
(** Footnote: poetic licence used, that conversation did happen, but semi had to choose to bat first, there were only 7 of us there for the start).
