Peppard Stoke Row CC v Chiltern Crusaders CC on Sun 09 Sep 2018 at 1.00pm
Chiltern Crusaders CC Won By 5 wickets
Match report
Skip and Skip Elect had a long chat on the way to the south Oxfordshire countryside about what we would do if we won the toss. Skip played along with Skip Elect’s natural exuberance and relative optimism, but secretly was ever mindful of misplaced confidence instilled from electing to bat, given the brutal reality of collapses that have ensued in our history (think Knotty Green, Penn St and Misfits all just this season). On arrival it was cloudy, green wicket and several teenagers in the oppo. Heads was called, heads it was - we’ll have a bowl.
Following discussions with other senior crusaders along the lines of “I’m not bowling up the f****** hill”, debutant Dion manfully stepped up and alongside Harry proved a potent opening partnership. Dion (of kiwi origin) was “using the dick” well, wasn’t getting hit for “sucks”, and took 2 early “wuckets”. Harry was very unlucky not to take any wickets in the opening spell but got his rewards later.
Next up the hill was yours truly and to say it was terrible was an understatement. Steamer also got tonked - bowling down the hill. George had a go as did Jim, but unfortunately 18-2 became 118-2 quite quickly. A nervous mini-Steamer made his bowling debut and acquitted himself well - he was more economical than his father. Skip Elect quietly did his usual 2-for-not-many and the run rate slowed. Enter Harry for the last few overs with another excellent spell of swing bowling, snaffling 3 wickets and a place on the honours board for the second time.
Fielding highlights included some usual Crusaders classics. Diamond parried a catch and I suspect was so pleased with his goal keeping skills that he forgot to catch the looping ball that resulted. Skip inexplicably lost the use of arms and legs trying to chase one at mid off (though did take a sharp catch there later!), and Steamer employed a new technique of “cat pounce” where he jumped on the ball as a cat would jump, 4-legged, on a mouse (though perhaps not the athleticism of a cat in this case). George and Jim set the example in the field diving all over the place and stopping several more runs. Buz was exceptional behind the stumps taking a couple of good catches and a bit of a bettering.
200 to win off 35 overs. Achievable. Skip and Jim opened and some wayward bowling saw us off to a quick start with 60 off the first 7 overs, Jim in particular employing the trademark flick hoik over leg side for a couple of meaty 6s. But then Skip got out top edging a full toss, Jim was out a few overs after that (successfully avoiding 50 for the second time this season), and then Skip Elect was done by the “ball of the century” - flapping at a slow, innocuous, straight one.
At 80-3 a familiar collapse looked on, but Dion and Stew steadied the ship and powered on to an 80 partnership. Stew was eventually out for 38 though not without a few run out scares (walk = run = jog = sprint for Stew these days). That left us 40 to win off 10 overs with Harry and Dion at the crease. A very mature innings from Harry saw us to within 5 runs before he chipped one to point. Diamond’s been here before and used all his experience to negotiate his first ball, before Dion got to 50 (on debut and on to the honours board) and smashed a 6 to win the game.
That is 2 wins on the bounce for the Crusaders, a new first. Well played all, a good team performance on a nice late summers day against good friendly oppo.
