Hit or Miss CC v Chiltern Crusaders CC on Sun 10 Jun 2018 at 2.00pm
Chiltern Crusaders CC Won By 75 Runs
Match report
Penn St is an area the Crusaders like to play cricket. This time it was a debut fixture against the Hit or Miss pub just along the way from Penn St CC. A beautiful day in the village, just about perfect for some cricket.
Skip, Semi, Skip Junior and Steamer arrived at the ground and as we parked up spied some players on the ground. Semi groaned and moaned that they looked young. We walked out to say hello only to find said young oppo was actually Jim, Rob, Edlin and Bomber.
Skip hadn’t really got a clear thought of whether to bat first, or not, having looked at the pitch - on a slope, very green and looking like it could play havoc - and a youngish looking oppo. In the end the decision was made by losing the toss and CCCC were inserted (gasps as the news was imparted).
It was a welcome return to Crusaders colours for Jim, Martin and Rob. Jim appeared to be back from a posting to colonial Delhi in white linen shirt, jauntily untucked.
Jim and Skip opened and a quick 80 partnership was undone by some jug avoidance by Jim on 49 missing a straight one. The one blight on the match was a very intimidatory shout for lbw against Skip Junior with bowler bellowing at Gaz to give it (Gaz of course never shy to give an lbw). That brought Bartlett to the crease. He and Skip pushed the score on some more before Skip top edged a slog to keeper for 43. Bartlett followed for 44 and along with some lusty blows from Martin and Gaz plus several wides we finished on 206 off the 35 overs. That’s the highest ever Crusaders score batting first.
It should be mentioned at this point the oppo only had 8 players. We gave them 2 fielders, rotating a few in and out. All to a man did a sterling job in not catching and expertly giving away runs, Rob in particular volleying one over the boundary for 4.
No such nonsense in our inning though with no dropped catches (probably also a Crusaders first) and excellent fielding all round. Rob in particular getting body in the way as always. 207 looked defendable and the fielding was certainly a key factor. Harry set the tone with a fast maiden over which certainly got them thinking. However, their opening pair wanted to blaze it and it looked, initially, that we could get blown away.
Skip, wisely, started to rotate the bowling around in short 2-3 over bursts. Eventually trusty Semi got the first break through. The batsman started talking about making sure kids playing on the boundary were out of the way (in preparation for him smacking Semi back over his head). That didn’t go unnoticed and Martin, ever the orator, checked (loudly) if Semi had heard that. Next ball - bowled him. A much needed break through. Cannily, given they only had 8, their Skip had asked for last man standing. What he knew beforehand, and we didn’t, is they had one of the classiest batsman we’ve ever played against anchoring the innings and didn’t look like getting out. At the other end wickets were falling though. A nice runout by Jim/Harry was a highlight. Skip was still worried about their anchorman though and it was all about getting him off strike. We did this pretty well giving him singles and fielders doing a great job of keeping it down to only one run when he was on strike.
Martin banished bowling demons of the past and bowled a nice spell to keep the runs down and the squeeze had started.
Jim then came on to bowl his awkward leggies. There was a moment of confusion when he said I’m going to bowl a “big knob bomber”. Bomber having heard the words “big knob, bomber” in other circumstances stood a little taller. This confused the batsman too, who then smacked the loopy full toss straight back to Jim for a sharp catch.
2 wickets to get but still the anchorman was there. In our favour was the run rate required was rising rapidly. Enter the final hero of the day. Rhodesey had been flayed around at the start as he struggled to bowl up the hill, but he returned at the other end inspired and bowled anchorman through the gate. A few balls later he took his second to take the lead in wickets for the season and it was all over for a Crusaders victory.
A great team effort by all, particularly in the fielding effort. Fyfer also deserves mention for a sterling effort behind the stumps. Well done to all.
