Chiltern Crusaders CC v Nevill Holt CC on Sat 27 Apr 2019 at 1.00pm
Chiltern Crusaders CC Won By 50 Runs
Match report
One for the purists….an exemplary batting and bowling performance with a terrific tea against ever enjoyable opposition. Under cloudy skies, Bartlett in his new role as skipper lost the toss and not surprisingly was asked to bat. A strong looking opening pair of Wilson and Slater started purposefully and soon had the run rate moving along at over 5 runs an over. Slater was particularly savage on anything legside, whilst Wilson looking a new man free from shackles of captaincy cut and drove with precision. An odd serenity enveloped the pavilion, quite different from the usual scrambling for thigh pads and boxes as wickets tumble.
Drinks were taken after 18 overs and soon after both openers had made their 50’s and a hundred partnership. To their credit both pushed on in true Crusaders style before Slater went stumped for 69 with the total at 139-1. Wilson then fell for 73 going for another big hit which brought Blair to join McLaughlin at the crease. Blair had looked the form play all winter which inevitably meant he perished for a duck. “Geez mate that was one hell of a nut” could be heard echoing around the ground. In fairness consensus was he’d got a good one. Wyatt then offered up an early hand for COTY by marching to the crease before then scampering back to the pavilion, having being informed by the bowler that some batting gloves might be useful! A good partnership followed with McLaughlin who played a fine cameo of 30,launching a couple of lusty blows for 6. The innings closed at 197 – 4 after 35 overs.
Beckwith produced a historic tea, the highlight being the scones with clotted cream – the catering bar has been set high!
Rhodes and Constable opened the bowling like men who had wintered well; both bowled an excellent line and length. Rhodes swung and nibbled the ball both ways, whilst Constable, playing in his first competitive game for over 20 years bowled with real pace. Both were unlucky to go wicketless. Beckwith, Partridge and Bartlett all then had a spell and bowled well in places. Partridge in particular looked back in good form. The responsibility of vice-captain clearly suits him. A few difficult chances went to ground and it was left to Rhodes coming back for his second spell to make the breakthrough removing the Nevill Holt skipper with the help of an excellent catch in the deep by Beckwith. A succession of wickets then followed within which McLaughlin had a magical half hour. He held a fine low catch off Bartlett, a spectacular diving catch off Rhodes, a sharp stumping off Beckwith and an appeal for lbw that could be heard for miles….the umpire through fear duly obliged.
Nevill Holt continued to battle but the game was up. Wilson bowled well and picked up a wicket with his first ball. He then clean bowled the next batsman first ball and for a moment was on a hat-trick. The ball was unfortunately over waist height (and of such filth) that after a consultation between skippers and umpires a no-ball was called to reprieve the rather forlorn looking batsman. Wilson wasn’t best pleased at first, but agreed, after a couple of pints in the bar, that the right decision had been made. The innings closed at 147 – 7 after 35 overs, but not before Bartlett had caused issues with the Nevill Holt scorer by bowling Rhodes and Partridge for more than their allotted 7 overs….maths clearly not his strong point. It was left the new vice-captain to placate the scorer, who had become pretty feisty about the whole situation. Rhodes was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 for 24.
So finally a win against our old adversaries at the fourth time of asking and four on the spin for the Crusaders……heady times indeed. Penn Street will serve up a more severe test on 11th May.
