Chiltern Crusaders CC

Scorecard

Penn St CC v Chiltern Crusaders CC on Sat 11 May 2019 at 1.00pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Liverpool lost only one game, City nearly got 100 points again, the Crusaders are now unbeaten in 5. Heady times.

A Crusaders favourite fixture at Penn St, started with the news that Skip had lost the toss and we were batting. Over the past year or two that has not been such a bad thing with CCCC average innings scores climbing each year. Nonetheless there was some trepidation with some of the regular run scorers not able to play. Skip and ex-Skip started well, putting on 65 for the first wicket, and seeing off the first couple of bowlers, before Skip crashed one straight back at the bowler after a fluid 29. Clint was in next and seems to have adopted the ‘down on one knee Diamond Dave’ approach, even in defence. It’s a testament as to how far Diamond has come that he is now the blueprint for other batsmen. Alas Clint missed a straight one hitting him on the knee on the floor in front of middle. Big Mac was next but was unlucky to chop on to his stumps, Bomber was undone by a good off spinner that moved a fair way. Ex Skip was starting to run out of partners at 98-4, but Diamond came in and ran his heart out in support of ex Skip as the score started to climb again. Unfortunately ex skip avoided a jug by charging at the off spinner on 47 and getting stumped.

Steamer was in next and the customary big swoosh of the bat was heard for miles around, just not the sound of the ball on it. The innings ended with a tremendous cameo from Rob making a welcome return to CCCC colours. He didn’t know it at the time but the 16 career high he made was very valuable and included some swashbuckling shots. 150 was the target, it looked a bit low, early wickets would be needed.

Penn St opening partnership was slow and steady but the score built at better than the run rate required. Some steady bowling from Bomber and Golden Arm started us off, but it was tried and trusted Steamer/Skip combo that got the break through and wickets then fell regularly. The prize wicket was their Skip who was batting nicely, until our Skip in fine form bowled him and it was game on. George chipped in with a valuable wicket. Annoyingly a couple of the lower order stuck around and ticked the score over. Skip very wisely took ex-Skip off when he was getting expensive and the red mist was descending at the persistent calling of back foot no balls (some what humourless umpire on their side deciding to forget that we had let off several no balls from a couple of their bowlers in the first dig). And then the rains came - a proper deluge on an uncovered pitch and that was that. We shook hands on a draw but one sensed that with only 2 wickets to get and one of the current batsman had never played cricket before it felt like a win that got away (duckworth lewis was also in our favour!).

Fielding highlights were few, no dropped catches, nothing really going to hand, but the ground fielding was generally pretty good. There was the obligatory volley over the boundary for 4 we get at some point every year - this time courtesy of Dicky Walker. Rob also decided to re-enact the Dicky vs Fence battle of 3 years ago. Readers will remember Dicky won that battle taking out the fence quite aggressively and comprehensively. This time in Rob vs Fence, the fence came away the winner and Rob bounced off it with a sore shoulder. Dicky vs Rob you might be thinking - tough call.

Overall a very enjoyable game and day out in Penn St as always.
