Chiltern Crusaders CC v Kimble CC on Sun 02 Jun 2019 at 2.00pm
Chiltern Crusaders CC Lost By 53 Runs
Match report
Six dumps, two voms, Bouncer-gate and Burger-gate………an eventful afternoon saw The Crusaders slip to their first defeat of the season. Players will need to look at their pre match preparation - individual consumption of 10 pints of cider, 3 bottles of wine and a double-hundred of units whilst on the sauce for a week in Cornwall certainly had a bearing on our performance.
Once again Bartlett lost the toss and under cloudless skies the Kimble captain decided to have a bat. Blair opened the bowling from the London Road End and we bore witness to one of the great spells of bowling from a Chiltern Crusader. He roared in with genuine pace to beat the bat on numerous occasions and twice took the edge but without success. Just as it seemed he would end the spell wicketless he produced an in-ducker of Waquar Younis proportions to rip out the leg stump of a quality opening bat. Another wicket for Blair soon followed when Partridge held onto a fine catch a mid-off. Rhodes at the other end was still struggling to shake off the effects of a week in Padstow and the change bowlers of Bartlett and Partridge did little to stem the flow of steady runs. The out fielding from Walker, Wyatt and Slater was excellent.
The skipper chopped and changed the bowlers to little effect as the Kimble opener moved towards a chanceless hundred and their best bat moved to a quick fifty. Georgiou however once again bowled well, Wilson returned fine figures of 5-0-15-1 and Rhodes came back for an good second spell to take a couple of wickets. The Kimble innings closed at 264 for 5 after 40 overs. All in all it wasn’t the Crusaders finest fielding display and one where the opposition should have been restricted to a total closer to 220 after 40 overs.
Beckwith once again laid on an excellent tea to revive his flagging teammates with scones to die for an enough mustard in the ham sandwiches to put hairs on your chest – thank you.
Wilson and Slater opened the innings and before long found themselves embroiled in Bouncer-gate. Wilson looking to continue his good form couldn’t get out of the way of a short ball which reared and hit him flush on the chin. Showing a good deal more courage than his British counterpart on the other side of pond, he didn’t go down and after a few minutes break (and newly helmeted) was able to continue. A few balls later however the same bowler decided to test his resolve and sent down another very short ball that hit him. Slater, rightly took umbrage, and in simple Geordie language tried to explain that this isn’t the type of cricket we play. The Kimble captain helped calm the situation down and after Wilson urged all parties to just carry on, everyone put their handbags away.
Once we got back to playing cricket, the openers continued their fine form and set about flaying the opening bowlers, going at 10 runs an over. Slater took particular delight in being savage on anything short. He fell shortly after having made a fine fifty. Blair then marched in at three determined to open his account for the Crusaders……unfortunately he had a rush of blood to the head and in trying to hit his first ball back to the mother land only succeeded in edging a catch to the keeper. Bartlett then appeared briefly before slapping a full toss to cover leaving the Crusaders up against it. 90 for 0 after 9 overs had become 98 for 3 after 14 overs.
The middle order batted with spirit - Wyatt got the legs pumping and looked comfortable before drilling one back to the bowler, McLaughlin played his usual exciting cameo helping Wilson to pass fifty once again for the season, Walker knocked the ball around nicely before being stumped / run out and Beckwith showed he could step on the gas as he played arguably his best innings for the Crusaders in scoring 36 not out, with a number of big shots down the ground.
Our innings closed at 211 for 9 after 40 overs which represented a decent effort against strong opposition, but we all reflected it could and should have been closer.
Earlier in the day, Partridge had kindly volunteered to buy a large selection of burgers, sausages, baps and rolls for a bbq which unfortunately due to the late finish and drizzle meant there was less appetite than expected…well none at all in fact. This led to a less than happy Semi bemoaning how was he going to freeze all this food and what would Ruth say…….suggestions of a meat raffle or buying a bigger freezer were met with a mixed response! The suspicion is that Burger-gate has not yet run its course.
The Hit or Miss next week when we hope to be back to winning ways.
