Chiltern Crusaders CC v Hit or Miss CC on Sun 09 Jun 2019 at 2.00pm
Chiltern Crusaders CC Lost By 67 Runs

Match report Business as usual for the Crusaders, the lofty heights of the “invincibles” run of 5 are now a distant memory. In the end it was a bit of a hammering against oppo we beat last year though that was against 8 players....this time with 10 they were too good.

Skip put us on the back foot first up by winning the toss and then basing his decision on logistics. Given the failure to bbq last week and the much debated burger situation (young Albert Partridge was only allowed burgers for tea all week), Skip decided we should bowl so that there was no chance of the bbq not happening.

Dion and Skip opened the bowling. The run rate was kept low and while no wickets the batters were frustrated. Ex Skip and Steamer came on next and, after Finn had put his back out making himself dizzy under a steepler of a chance, when the ball was fired toward him off Ex Skip the odds didn’t look good. But safe as houses Finn pouched and we were underway. Shortly after ex Skip took a fizzing catch at cover and the Crusaders were growing in confidence.

Unfortunately their young opener took a liking to Bomber and debutant Roobs (who opened his account for CCCC with a double bouncing no ball - classic Crusader in the making). Some dubious fielding didn’t help. Depth perception appears to be a team issue in an ageing side, but Steamer in particular made a total hash of a chance off Bombers bowling, collapsing in a heap while the ball ricocheted off him for 4. Skip was also guilty doing the hokey cokey, needs bent arms stretched (and flailing), before realising he was too far under it.

After a testing few middle overs, the run rate dropped especially after their opener was eventually out, wickets for Dion, Skip, Steamer and ex-Skip and they were all out for 211, very chaseable.

Big Mac stepped in to Beckwith’s shoes for the tea and didn’t disappoint. Skip asked ex-Skip to open the batting and was told ok but not feeling great. In an effort to feel better Ex-Skip then managed to flush the portaloo all over himself such that his whites were pebble dashed with the blue chemicals from the toilet. That didn’t translate well to the pitch and the rich vain of batting form was cut short abruptly, getting out lamely with a catching practice to point. A collapse ensued. Macca can feel a bit aggrieved (and he's been unlucky all season) when Finn inexplicably ran a single having hit the ball straight to mid wicket leaving Macca stranded. Blair seemed to have 9 lives, dropped and missed run outs, but couldn't capitalise. Skip came in and blazed, including a couple of big sixes (and for a brief moment the game looked back on), but he holed out. Diamond continued to impress with bat in hand, but struggled to get the ball away in what was already a lost cause. Sonic and Steamer prolonged the last stand with some excellent play (against their best bowlers), but all to no avail.

The batting collapse meant we were never really in it, but a good day out, good oppo, and an excellent BBQ at the end!
